At first glance a Kalshi contract looks like a bookmaker's line. Both are ways to put money on a future outcome. But the underlying model is completely different, and understanding the difference will change how you approach both.

The Counterparty

A sportsbook takes the other side of your bet and profits from the built-in margin (the 'vig'). A prediction market is peer-to-peer: you buy shares from another user, and the platform earns a small commission for hosting the exchange. There is no built-in edge against you.

Pricing

Bookmaker odds are set by the house and adjusted to balance the book. Prediction market prices are set by supply and demand between traders — closer to a stock exchange than a sportsbook. That's why prediction markets tend to be more accurate over large samples.

Which One For You

If you enjoy sports betting for entertainment on a single game, a sportsbook is fine. If you want to trade probability across politics, economics, and long-horizon questions with tighter effective margins, a prediction market is the better tool.
